In The Story of an Hour,the integration of selective omniscient and the limited point-of-view narration dynamically reveals the mental activities of the heroine. This multiple point-of-view narration not only enhances the dramatic tension,but enables the reader,in the process of reading the narrative discourse, to construct a network of various mental spaces and hence generate a cognitive interpretation of the fictional text.

Awakening is the representative work of Kate Chopin, a famous American female writer. In telling the story of the heroine-Anna''s pursuit of true self, freedom and independence and her gradual awakening, the author also presents us vividly the cultural tradition, values and conventions of the then society. This paper analyzes the three female characters-Adele, Reisz and Edna, and their different fates from the perspective of the then social culture. All the three females are the products of the then social culture, and their different destinies all have historical inevitability. It is impossible for women to have real freedom in the then social environment and cultural context. Chopin uses this novel to show the absurd aspects of the social culture and also to put forward a good wish for the future society.

Kate Chopin’s The Awakening challenges the notion of motherhood, which reflects her exploration of female identity and the fetters that women confronted when they searched for their suitable value system in the 19th century. Utilizing Adrienne Rich’s notion of “two mothers”, this essay reevaluates three women’s identity. It is suggested that Chopin sati-rizes female identity under male gaze by depicting Adele as an ideal mother-woman, Reisz’ untraditional image of Other is a partial loss of female identity and Edna is bound to lose herself in pursuit of her female space.
