功能性是英语语调的基本特征之一,在研究领域,英语语调功能分为语法功能、表态功能、重音功能和语篇功能四类。基于语调功能对国内大学英语听力教材中的英语语调应用情况进行的归纳和数据统计显示:英语本族语者倾向于借助语调实现交际意图;降调的使用频率最高;语调与句型之间没有规约关系,其选择依赖交际语境。基于语调功能和EFL语境的三种英语语调教学策略有助于提高学生的英语交际能力。
Functionality functional is one of the basic characteristics of English intonation. In research, its functions are divided into such four categories as grammatical function, attitudinal function, accentual function and discourse function. Based on intonation function, a summary of English intonation application in college English listening materials and related statistics show that native speakers tend to use intonation to achieve communication purposes;use frequency of falling tone ranks the first;there is no one-to-one relationship between intonation type and sentence type and the choice of intonation relies on communication contexts. A trial of three kinds of English intonation teaching strategies within EFL learning environment will contribute to students’ improvement of communicative abilities.

English is an intonation language, while Chinese is a tone language, which determines English intonations will be kind of cul-tural default. In verbal communication, using different intonations may express different meanings and fulfill different functions. Therefore to output all the meanings and functions of English intonations in an English-Chinese translation is never an easy job. This article makes a detailed analysis on various functions of English intonation, and explores the possible translation methods from the perspective of func-tional equivalence.

To transmit the information effectively is one of the ultimate goals in EFL teaching and learning.There are some mistakes in Chinese EFL learners’ production of intonational phrase.Mistakes such as making no pause within a sentence, pausing too much within a sentence or pausing at wrong locations exist widely.There are less downward pitch and narrower pitch range within an intonation phrase.These mistakes not only reduce the amount of information conveyed, destroy the wholeness of the information, shift the information focus, bring about ambi-guity, but also leave the impression of monotonousness and dullness on listeners in information transmission and make the speech sound unnatural.Teachers should pay attention to cultivating the students’ consciousness of in-tonational phrase and strengthen students’ ability of using intonational phrase in the future teaching.

Based on Halliday’s theory of English intonation triple systems,this paper makes a summary of the textual functions of several most commonly-used tonal sequences of English intonation.Then under the guide of text macro-structure theories, a tentative exploration of the relationship between tone applications and the macro-structure elements in the text is done by ana-lyzing the tone choices in a reading-aloud text.It is found that,besides conveying information,tones in a text participate in macro-structure construction of the text by highlighting and emphasizing its important textually-functioning components.

In this study, the unmarked interrogative sentence in Anyang dialect was contrasted with declarative sentence and the interrogative sentence with a question mark "Ma". It was studied through quantitative data and comparison. Conclusions showed that: In the absence of question marks, we mainly rely on rising intonation to express the interrogative mood in Anyang dialect, and the last syllable of sentence carrying most of the interrogative intonation. The type of tonal addition is successive addition. On the contrary, in Mandarin, we express interrogative mood by the question mark and the intonation.
