Since the 20th Century, the research on Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove has roughly experienced four periods:the start, slow development, multiple propulsion and rapid development. Research achievements in the first two periods were mainly focused on Ruan Ji and Ji Kang,and the topics were relatively unitary. The next two periods witnessed various approaches and remarkable expansion of perspectives and fields in the research. Not only did the quantity increase distinctly, the quality also improved remarkably, with the research on relative subjects being further deepened. Many masterpieces with distinctly innovative characteristics came out in the form of books and papers. Nevertheless, evident defects existed as well. Therefore, it is of great academic significance to straighten out the history of this study and to summarize the gains and losses in setting directions and making breakthroughs in research.
