2Cr12MoV steel spacers were hardened by flame and by high-frequency induction respectively.The results indicate that the spacers hardened by both the procedures are well-matched in surface hardness,and that the amount of distortion resulting from the surface hardening is mainly under influence of hardening process,thickness and heated area of the spacer.Furthermore,relative to the flame hardening,the high-frequency induction hardening can allow the spacer to exhibit less distortion and relatively stable hardening quality.The efficiency of the spacer being hardened is about one time higher by induction than by flame,the induction hardening being more suitable to mass production of the spacer.

Laser hardening is a new method for surface hardening of gear tooth. It characteristics of little deformation after hardening compared with carburized gears, which can be widely used in the industries. According to the two dif-ferent heat treatments of gears, laser hardening and carburizing, the base materials, manufacturing process and produc-tion cost of two different hardened-gears are compared. The research results show that laser-hardened gears are eco-nomical compared to carburized gears.

This article summarized the research progress on the theories of laser quenching, and meanwhile analyzed the forma-tion mechanism of hardening layer, as well as its difference from the formation mechanism of the traditional gear quenching meth-ods. Through the analysis of scanning way, offset, scanning speed, angle of incidence and auxiliary cooling technology in the process of laser quenching, corresponding optimization schemes were put forward. By comparing the hardness of tooth surface, wear resistance, deformation, the microstructure and grain shape and distribution of the gears treated by laser quenching and normal quenching, it was concluded that the gear product of laser quenching had better mechanical performance than those prepared by the conventional quenching.

In a few hours after being medium-frequency induction hardened ,the cracks were found in root of crankshaft gear made of 42CrMoA steel of some type of heavy-duty diesel engine.The analysis shows that the delayed cracking of the root is attributed to excessive tensile stress which originated from the effect of heat producing during afterwards hardening of the teeth on king journal early hardened.The root cracking has been avoided by adopting several measures which are as follows:(a)the king journal is stress relieved by heating to 240 ℃for 4 h after being hardened and grinded and before the teeth being hardened;(b)the hardened king journal is additionally cooled during hardening of the teeth;(c)the round joint of king journal and tooth side is not hardened.
