In view of the unique properties of Yunnan lignite semi-coke, an experiment on the production of calcium carbide has been carried out with lignite semi-coke to replace metallurgical coke partly. Study focus on the impact of lignite semi-coke particle size, reactivity, ash and other indicators on the production of calcium carbide. The study shows that the particle size less than 4mm component of semi-coke should not exceed 10%. The high reactivity property of semi-coke is favorable to the calcium carbide production, but also improves the reduction rate of harmful substances in ash, and adverse to the production of calcium carbide, so the ash content in the semi-coke should not be over 7%. The eexperiment indicates partial substitution of lignite semi-coke for metallurgical coke in the calcium carbide production is feasible, and has a certain role in saving energy.

Effect of sulfur impurity on coke reactivity was investigated by simulating petroleum coke with low-impurity pitch coke and impurities doping. And its mechanism was discussed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results show that sulfur has strong catalysis on both air and CO2 reactivity of coke in the case of no other impurity interference. Its catalysis is probably realized by triggering organic sulfur→H2S→SO2→COS and elemental sulfur (Sx)→SO2 and organic sulfur→H2S→COS→Sx→C2S→COS reaction systems during coke?O2 and coke?CO2 reactions, respectively, which are partly circular with functions of increasing carbon consumption and enlarging coke specific surface area.

The practice of the process control of low-cost ironmaking in Xinye Iron and Steel Group Co.was summa-rized.To achieve the goal of low cost of ironmaking,each department of the ironmaking plant made great efforts. On the basis of stable and smooth operation of BF,several key measures have been taken including optimization of ore blending of sintering,strengthening management of ore before charging,increase in the ratio of sinter,lumpy ore and nut coke in every charging batch,and enhancement of the ratio of pulverized coal injection and enriched oxy-gen.Via those measures,reasonable gas distribution and efficient gas utilization in the BF are realized,which leads to the smooth and stable operation of BF,low fuel consumption of sintering and BF,and decrease of other manufac-turing cost,thereby achieving the target of economic ironmaking.
