@@@@A new method of generating periodic linear chirped pulse is proposed, and a 0.52 nm bandwidth periodic chirped pulse is gener-ated. Numerical simulation shows that the gain saturation, group velocity dispersion and synchronization jitter have great influences on chirped pulse;and self-phase modulation has little influence since the peak power stays at a low level. The experimental results indicate that the polarization mode dispersion will lead to a great intensity modulation, and the amplified spontaneous emission will break the light stability, which leads to the fewer round-trips of light. Research shows that the direct phase modulation is a novel method of generating periodic linear chirped pulse, which could be used for smoothing the spectral dispersion.

Under the condition that the launched pulses are chirped Gaussian pulses and in considering the randomness of bit pattern and initial phase of bit sequence in each channel, a semi-analytic calculation model applied to evaluate the variance of degenerated four-wave mixing noise in dispersion-management wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system is estabilished. The pulse amplitude expressions for the chirped Gaussian pulse in dispersion-management fiber link are deduced in detail. The dispersion map is composed of two variable fiber segments with same absolute value and opposite sign of dispersion. The simulation indicates that the pulse characteristic widths have obvious impacts on standard variance of FWM noise, while the standard variance of FWM noise increases with the increase of pulse characteristic widths. The modified Bloch equations with chirped terms are established through the semi-classical theory of light-matter interaction. In addition, the above equations are solved by an accurate, efficient and modified fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. We investigate the interactions between a strong chirped ultra-short pulse and a two-level system numerically. The results show that the chirp parameter, incident pulse area, pulse length and detuning have obviously modulatory effect on the population. Furthermore, how the laser pulse parameters affect the population is also studied, which helps us how to manipulate the population by adjusting the strong chirped ultra-short laser pulse parameters.

In order to study the transmission properties of optical signal influenced by self- phase modulation (SPM) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), based on the transmission equation, the generation principle of SPM was analyzed, the temporal and spectral characteristics of pulse transmitting through the SOA were obtained, the simulations are made separately to the pulse with no chirp and pulse with chirp. The result shows that SPM makes the shape of pulse decline and makes the spectrum broaden to lower frequency, and the degree of declination and broadening increases with growth of the gain of SOA, the sign of chirp coefficient determines whether the spectrum will be broadened to the high frequency or to the lower frequency.

A scanning spectral filter method is proposed for improving the intensity contrast originating from the phase ripple in the fem-tosecond chains, which is made using the character that the instantaneous frequency varies with the time approximately linearly for the chirped pulse in the time-frequency domain. The scanning spectral filtering for reducing the pre-pulse and post-pulse intensity is analyzed in the time-frequency domain by using the short-time Fourier transformation method. Results show that the coherent intensity pulse contrast can be improved by 0.41F2 for the chirped pulse or the compressed pulse, and the transmission efficiency of the chirped pulse can exceed 90% when the synchronizing time of the jitter ranges from ?2 ps to 2 ps and the chirp rate p from 0.9 C/T 2 to 1.1C /T 2.

A new reflective grism, which combines together the grating and prism, is introduced in this paper. The numerical simulation, based on the ray tracing, shows that the grism pair can introduce minus GVD and GDD;therefore it can well compensate for the material dispersions in the chirped pulse amplifier (CPA). Compared to the conventional CPA with up-chirp, the new scheme with down-chirp can support a near Fourier Transform-limited compressed pulse due to much better compensation for high-order dispersion of materials in amplifier, in which the grism acts as the stretcher and the ZF7 bulk material as the compressor. In addition, the improved transmission efficiency and simplified configuration makes it a promising way to amplify femtosecond laser pulses to sub-mJ at a high repetition rate.

Cross-polarized wave (XPW) generation based on BaF2 crystal is one of the most important tools in improving the contrast of ultra-intense femtosecond laser pulses at present. In this paper, the influences of linear chirp with different input pulse intensities on BaF2 XPW generation, including conversion e?ciency, spectrum broadening, and pulse duration reduction are in detail simulated and discussed. Especially, the influence of linear chirp on spectrum broadening is comparatively investigated under unsaturated and intense input pulses. While the amount of spectrum broadening relative to linear chirp is symmetrical with respect to the zero chirp point under unsaturated input pulse, the results show that it is no longer those in the case under intense input pulse, and the intrinsic reason is explained in detail in this paper.

With numerical simulation technique, the filter effect on the performance of the output pulses is investigated in passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with negative dispersion cavity. Numerical results show that, as the bandwidth of the super-Gaussian spectral filter decreases, the filter effect becomes more and more obvious. The pulse duration decreases and the peak power increases, and the pulse spectrum broadens accordingly, meanwhile the nonlinear chirp appended to the pulse increases. Further decreasing the bandwidth, the spectrum sidebands become weak, and the edges of the pulse emerge pedestals. In addition, by using a Gaussian spectral filter in the laser cavity instead, the influences of the filter effect would be weak with the decrease of the nonlinear chirp.

Based on the principle of spectral scanning filtering method ,a new scanning filtering method for improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the chirped pulse by using the photorefractive effect was proposed and theoretically analyzed .For the scan-ning filtering implement of Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon with a built-in photorefractive crystal ,the transmittance spectral character-istics of the scanning filter were analyzed quantitatively .Furthermore ,the effects of the reflectivity of the parallel-plates of Fab-ry-Perot etalon ,the bandwidth of the transmittance spectral window ,the variation of the controlling parameters of the applied field and the variation of the chirped rate to the photorefractive crystal on the SNR improvement and the overall transmittance were discussed in details .The results show that the higher the reflectivity of the F-P parallel-plates is ,the transmittance spectral is sharper and the transmittance window is narrower ,resulting in the better filtering effect .I

Nonlocal nonlinearity is one of the hottest topics in the nonlinear optics and even the nonlinear science. In this paper, the frequency chirp induced by the self-phase modulation (SPM) in a high noninstantaneous medium is investigated. It is found that the temporal distribution of the SPM-induced chirp can be approximated by the “inverted image” of the pulse intensity in the highly noninstantaneous limit. Moreover, this property does not depend on the envelope of the pulse. By using these properties, the temporal characteristics of the pulse propagation in a highly noninstantaneous medium is analyzed.
